Nani India

Benoît Raoulx Directed by Benoît Raoulx

Every year, with my wife Rupa and our two kids Felix Raghav and Anouk Tara, we visit the family home in Delhi. “Nani India” (“Grandmother India”, Rupa’s mother) lives there alone and performs the rituals that strictly punctuates her life. While I am discovering a world, this one carries its own vanishing. The film, shot over a decade, shares a gaze upon the birth of a memory and the transmission in a multicultural family.

Yakushima, The Enchanted Forest

Olivier Marin Directed by Olivier Marin

In southern Japan, in this region where temperate and tropical climates meet, Yakushima rises above the East China Sea. This island, whose mountain peaks reach nearly 2,000 meters, appeared 15 million years ago when magma escaping from volcanic fissures solidified on the seabed. Here, isolation and the absence of large predators have allowed a unique symbiosis between endemic subspecies of Japanese macaques and sika deer. The heights of Yakushima are home to the world's last ecosystem dominated by Japanese cedar trees. Some of these trees date back to ancient times and have survived centuries of logging. It was while discovering this fabulous island that Hayao Miyazaki found the inspiration to make the animated film Princess Mononoke, which resembles an ecological fable. Yakushima's unique biodiversity earned it the distinction of being the first Japanese site to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. All these wonders attract more than 250,000 visitors each year, and this human tide poses a threat to the 1,900 species of plants, some of which grow only here. On this island, which is barely more than 80 miles in circumference, Nagata Beach is home to the largest nesting site in the North Pacific for loggerhead sea turtles. However, the coastline is threatened by rising sea levels and plastic pollution carried by the currents. Long damaged by human activity, Yakushima is now trying to regain its natural balance.

Planet Killers - The Tiger Cartels

Paul Moreira and Stéphane Malterre Directed by Paul Moreira and Stéphane Malterre

"Planet Killers – The Tiger Cartel " takes us deep into the illegal tiger trade across Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and China. Fewer than 5,000 tigers remain in the wild, yet these endangered animals have become highly valuable commodities for a powerful criminal network. In Laos, the investigation infiltrates clandestine breeding facilities where tigers are raised like livestock, while in Thailand, it traces the traffickers behind the trade. The journey continues to Vietnam and China, where tiger bones, skins and other body parts are transformed into products such as glue, liquor and pills, promoted for supposed medicinal benefits. Following smugglers, investigators and activists, the film uncovers the international network driving the exploitation of one of Asia’s most iconic wild animals.

Our New World / The Pulse of Change

Fred Fougea, Gilles Dufraisse Directed by Fred Fougea, Gilles Dufraisse

What world will we live in tomorrow? This film reveals Nature's astonishing adaptation abilities, facing global warming. How ecosystems change, how animals and plants move to find more suitable conditions and how they change their behavior. On every continent, men and women are on the front line. Facing rapid changes in their natural environments, they are finding solutions to adapt and keep pace with nature's movements. They reveal for us this new world and give us new reasons for hope. Thanks to spectacular visual effects, this film also reveals the metamorphosis of landscapes: the migration of forests, the journey of corals, the greening of mountains after the retreat of glaciers... So many transformations that are gradually shaping the face of our new world.
